—Copy and paste the VIRAL-ICONS and instructions below/above this line—

Instructions:

1.) Copy and paste the matrix of “Viral Icons” below courtesy of Ilker Yoldas from The Thinking Blog. TIP : Easy way to do this : When viewing this page in browser go to View----->Page Source (CTRL+U) in Firefox and View------>Source in Internet Explorer. This page source will open in a Notepad file. Just copy all between the lines "———Copy and paste the VIRAL-ICONS and instructions below/above this line———".
Then paste it in Edit Html tab of post editor when creating your post.

2)Make a favicon for your blog.

3.) Upload your non-animated favicon (GIF image of size 16x16 pixels) to any free hosting service, Googlepages or to your own server provided by your hosting service if you have one. Then copy down it's link : LINK OF YOUR FAVICON.

4.) Substitute the Host Icon and one of the “Viral Icons” in the matrix with your ALT text of choice and your blog’s URL. Maximum of 3 specific keywords for the ALT text are best for it to be effective.

Here is an example:

<a href="LINK OF YOUR BLOG"><img alt="YOUR KEYWORDS HERE" src="LINK OF YOUR FAVICON" /></a>

Replace the CAPS in the above code with actual values.

5.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your icon in one of their “Viral Icons”, practice good karma by copying his/her Host Icon’s code (automatically the associated ALT tag will also be copied) and paste it over one of your “Viral Icons” below.

6.) Invite your readers to do the same and soon this can grow virally.

Rules: No Porn Sites, Only 1 icon per person (i.e. don't hog the ViralIcons!), and please don't tamper with other people's ALT tags, URLs or favicons.

Important: Once I get a ping back from you (I promise to do the best I can), I will add your favicon and the associated code you designate as “Host Icon” here, replacing one of the “Viral Icons” from the matrix above. Memories....

Introduction: This non-native Asian imported tree will rapidly grow to 70 to 100 feet in height and produces an open canopy. Broken stems smell of rancid peanut butter, and male trees reportedly smell worse than females.

Specifics: Scientific name: Ailanthus altissima
Pronunciation: ay-LANTH-us al-TISS-sim-muh
Common name(s): Ailanthus, Tree-of-Heaven, Chinese sumac, stinking shumac
Leah name: Brooklyn weed

Tree-of-Heaven Culture: Tree-of-Heaven performs best in full sun on well drained, moist soil but this is a tree that will survive almost anywhere, under any cultural conditions - smoke, dust, hot, cold, wet, or dry. It has been known to appear in cracks of pavement or even trash piles, and it will survive where no other trees will grow. If well cared for, this tree can persist for a long time. Large specimens are known to grow trunks up to five feet in diameter.

Propagation: Ailanthus is a prolific seeder, scattering up to 325,000 windblown seeds per tree each year. Tree-of-Heaven also spreads by suckering. It protects its territory by secreting toxins that suppress competing plants.

What the Experts Say!: Dr. Mike Dirr, Professor of Horticulture, University of Georgia:
"The tree that grows in Brooklyn could be none other than this species. Tough, persistent, and durable to a fault, it has few redeeming landscape features."

Edward Sibley Barnard, Author, "New York City Trees":
"Biologists trying to keep the ailanthus from overwhelming native trees in urban parks and preserves have had only limited success. Despite their efforts, the ailanthus is here to stay."

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn": The Tree-of-Heaven was used as the major inspirational theme in Betty Smith's novel "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". The metaphor she used was that the ailanthus' obvious persistence was like her book's characters aspirations to a better life.
Little did she know that this plant is actually capable of widespread destruction of urban property in the form of damaged building foundations and sidewalks. That is literally the reverse of the metaphor expressed in the book.

Early hacking...

It was 1986, the internet was still an embryo. On my campus we had the ability to send email--no ftp or file transfer was available except for direct modem to modem pay per minute charges on 56K.

So I wrote a program in PASCAL to convert any binary file to ASCII, and sent my files as email. The recipient just had to have the ASCII to binary converter and it was a done deal. Now whether all that was really necessary is a different question.

Don't cut the hair on my chinny chin chin...

Got a haircut today, FINALLY, for the first time in months. My barber is one of those old-timers, retired Navy, working out of his basement shop...the classic barber pole outside. He's got Bill O'Reilly playing on the radio. Old military paraphernalia hanging on the wall or in the showcase.

Now I look like Dutch Boy; sometimes he's good with the payos, sometimes he just doesn't see the point...

Google street view!

I discovered this today. When you pull a map out of google, selected streets in larger cities will offer the "street view". You can move up and down the street, zoom, tilt, pan just like you are walking. Now they just need to include more streets...

Manhattan...."island"?

OK, this is where I am clueless. I'm looking at this map of Manhattan island, and I'm wondering how the hell it's an island? Where's the water on the other side? Not being totally hopeless, I decided that maybe, like other parts of the world like chicago, mumbai, and Amsterdam, the water was artificially built up, making what was once an island into part of the mainland.

I could save face by hiding my ignorance and finding the answer on the internet. But what's the fun in pretending to know everything?
.......

Ok, so it's an "island" because of the Harlem River? I think that's cheating....
