Leah Kleim makes a living extorting people, usually taking advantage of the victim's perceived status. Her favorite victims are rabbis because the reputation is so critical in the community that it's really easy money. I am posting this to advise anyone who may be doing a search on Leah Kleim, or anyone thinking of posting to her blog, calling, or emailing her. Heed the warning: STAY AWAY. She often lures potential victims with offers to call her or email her, but it always leads to an attempt to defame the unsuspecting person. The manager of this blog, Pinny, was tricked in this way; the piece-of-trash began a blog labeling Pinny a "child molester" of all things; of course any personal data on the defamatory site was found using google or taken from this blog, so the attack is a fairly weak one. Nevertheless, I would advise anyone to avoid getting involved with the "person" (the term hardly applies here) at all.

The number of people who have been thus affected has grown to the extent that there are even blogs dedicated to retaliating. Some people have attempted to defend their good name in the same way. pExample! Google book search has many books in the public domain for free download. These are available in text and .pdf formats. The search allows you to select books with full text available as well. Use the advanced search function. The books are mostly scanned from affiliate university libraries.

www.freebookspot.com has full books for free download. Most of these are in .pdf format though there are a few in .djv also. These are downloaded via various services such as rapidshare which offer some free or premium services. The list is heavy with computer and scientific titles, but there is also a nice variety. Warning: some of these titles may be under copyright.

Newsgroups, particularly alt.binaries.e-book.technical has many titles for free download. You need newsgroup server access, which you may get for free via your ISP, or you can subscribe to a service for a reasonable fee. Examples include Usenet and Newsgroups-binaries. A newsreader/search engine is also very useful. I use Xnews.

Of course, don't forget Project Gutenberg, which has a growing list of thousands of public domain titles in multiple formats: www.gutenberg.net .

Finally, most torrent sites have a long list of available e-books including audio e-books. Checkout Mininova for searching torrents and download them with utorrent.

Obviously, I've been away for awhile. This is related to several factors, including my incompetence regarding disk repartitioning which led to the most recent post. I was also soured for awhile based on my experiences with certain manipulative evil bloggers out there on the lunatic fringe. Frankly, I find it difficult to find internet "places" where civility is maintained. Many social bloggers prefer not to moderate comments, in the name of free speech/expression, and/or because allowing anything tends to bring hits. Why in G-d's name any noncommerical entity would care about getting a lot of hits is beyond me....but put many people on the internet and it's no holds barred verbal fisticuffs in response to even the most innocent of comments.

Mandriva 3D Desktop is fantastic. I'm going to dedicate my XP machine to that and run Vista for now on my new machine. There are still important applications which are windows-only. I highly recommend trying out Mandriva at least on a DVD boot.

Home publishing macro available

Recently I completed writing a Visual BASIC macro (for MSWord 2003) which is useful for DIY bookmakers. This code is available to anyone who would be interested.

The input for the code is a text file such as those freely obtainable from Project Gutenberg or the user's self-authored manuscript. The user chooses the size of the signatures; further manipulation requires adjustment of the source code. There is little to no error checking included; it's a bare bones operation.

The output is formatted to print two columns (separated by the gutter) on each side of typical 8 -1/2" x 11" sheets of copy paper. Before printing, illustrations and additional formatting tweaks can be added. When printed, the sheets can then be folded and assembled into signatures and bound.

The macro is very easy to use and comes with a page of instructions for clarification.

Indeed interesting comments. Yet chances are we have all be slandered and libeled on the Internet by vindictive, nut cases. If we own companies, we have had competitors do this. Most often someone will make up something and make a fake name and try to destroy your brand name, personal integrity out of jealousy, competitiveness or simply spite.

Leah is another form of predator: the extortion junkie. She told me that she plans to make a lot of money smearing Chabad. One big rabbi even asked her "how much money will it take to remove your blog?" Leah's response? "$100,000". She says that the rabbi claimed he would get back to her on that. This does not imply guilt on the part of the offended party; this implies slander. Some people are able and willing to pay out big to stop smear campaigns like that.

She also told me that she plans to make money by suing those who use her feaux "company's" name, "ShtickDreck.com". One cannot blame Leah for her hardship. She is 30 years old, a mother with three kids, involved in a troubled marriage, and she doesn't work. Will she extort her husband as well?

This is obviously the basis for the slander against me. She plans to earn cash by smearing me. Ain't gonna happen. And there's plenty of evidence against her in this slander case, not to mention a rap sheet the size of Florida (hmmm....why did I choose Florida?).

So my eight-year old intrepid is stuck in second gear; next my speedometer goes out--reads only zero. I bring it in immediately on the urging of the serviceman. Result: input and output speed sensors wasted, two "cracked" belts, and obliterated front strut supports, transmission fluid flush.
Damage: $1775

But I can't be there to pick it up today, I can't pick it up tomorrow, and they're closed on Sunday, so I need a rental for three days. What do they give me? A bright red Dodge Ram. It's so huge and so bright red that if I get stuck in traffic all I need is to strap a hose on the side and the other drivers will pull over so I can get through. If this is your
vehicle, "you may be a redneck."

I raced to get through my visits. One patient already transferred to rehab: check. Next patient ready to go home, so I took care of the discharge: check. Third patient was on the way to the ER; phone the ER: great; the patient was discharged home. Done!

I manage to make it to the dock in time for our charter. My brother, sister, and father (spouses in tow) and I board the 32' cruiser. My sister sleeps off the scopolamine; I don't get seasick, never have. After two hours of searching for the right spot with the Tournament Master ("cheat box"), we anchor and toss our minnow-laden lines in the water. We expect to catch lake perch. We do--a dozen or more pigmy-sized puny pipsqeak perch, a few arguably big enough to keep. But my brother and I manage to get to know one another again, and that's really the whole point of fishing anyway. The fish are just props.

The sunset looked wonderful, bright orange, marking the silhouette of the Chicago skyline, almost 40 miles away. The Sears Tower and John Hancock (where my grandmother's cousin lives) were clearly visible. The Gary airshow is this weekend, someone mentioned. It was such a beautiful day.

A lot of people today, maybe even some of you, think you can read something on the web, maybe from books, or you can point to mistakes someone has made, and you think you're a doctor.

Let me educate these people. No matter how much you've read or think you know, it doesn't take the place of 11 years of education and ten years of clinical experience. Sure, there are doctors who suck; there are doctor's who are overburdened and their acumen is affected. Some of them even occasionally don't do the right thing. Doesn't matter. Everyday I see people who don't follow medical advice because they think they know better. These people are fooling themselves. Everyday I meet people who believe they will live forever, or that their behavior will one day result in a peaceful timely death, just the way they want it. You're deluded.

Here are some typical BULLSHIT diagnoses that I often see adults labelled with: fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome (iBS--emphasis on the last two initials), adult ADD. I am not saying these are nonexistent. However, 9 times out of 10 they are incorrect. There are idiot doctors out there who cannot admit that they DON'T KNOW, or are strapped into inventing a label so the insurance will pay for the health care. (the fucked up situation of American healthcare system is a whole 'nother discussion).

There's no bullshit in claiming that medicine is a calling. Anyone who is involved who has not received this calling came into it for the wrong reasons, and will likely be unsuccessful. Those who became physicians with a true feeling of the "calling" or instinctual need to do so, have chosen medicine for that reason. Hashem heals and provides miracles which are channeled through such persons. There is a combination of education, experience, and spirituality involved in helping people which cannot be imitated or duplicated. Anyone who denies this or doesn't understand this is doomed to harming themselves or to being harmed by an inadequate practitioner.

It was 1986, the internet was still an embryo. On my campus we had the ability to send email--no ftp or file transfer was available except for direct modem to modem pay per minute charges on 56K.

So I wrote a program in PASCAL to convert any binary file to ASCII, and sent my files as email. The recipient just had to have the ASCII to binary converter and it was a done deal. Now whether all that was really necessary is a different question.

OK, this is where I am clueless. I'm looking at this map of Manhattan island, and I'm wondering how the hell it's an island? Where's the water on the other side? Not being totally hopeless, I decided that maybe, like other parts of the world like chicago, mumbai, and Amsterdam, the water was artificially built up, making what was once an island into part of the mainland.

I could save face by hiding my ignorance and finding the answer on the internet. But what's the fun in pretending to know everything?

The bandwidth on Googlepages is piss poor, and so I cannot get all style images to load. True, you get what you pay for, but I recommend putting some files onto Yahoo geocities. At least the usage rate is openly stated. They give much less total storage than Google, but I believe the bandwidth on the free Yahoo site is better.

Whoopee! Goin' on vacation dudes !

When I was a kid I routinely took round trip flights at least twice a year in the U.S. I can't even remember how many trips to eretz yisroel and europe I've done, but the last time I was in an airplane was ten years ago!

Frankly, as a youngster I was very comfortable flying. Now that I have an understanding of the physics of flight and how an airplane works, it's hard for me not to feel really nervous...in spite of the fact that statistically, flying is the safest means of travel. There's only a piece of foam and a few inches of aluminum between your butt and a puddle of protoplasm. Drive a car and what does a major hardware failure leave you? ---thumbing a ride back to town. Ride in an airplane, a hardware failure leaves you thumbing a ride to shomayim, and several minutes of blood curdling, hair-raising nightmare until the Big Man pulls over and opens the car door.
(Yes, I do have a colorful imagination)

I imagine a completely different pre-flight experience now. My last flight was prior to 9-11. Used to be you could carry on a small knife (though I never wanted to), a bottle of shampoo, razors for shaving, and just about anything else. You could wander in and out of the gate at will. Wonder what to expect...

Am I "not right?" There is always that possibility. What you'll never find me doing however, is:

approach someone without that person's permission,

"annoy" someone who exlicitly states that he/she would prefer that I leave him/her alone or "not interested."

employ verbal abuse, such as through posts, email, or otherwise,

Post nude pictures (in spite of the fact that Leah voluntarily sent me a couple of her without my asking her to--not that I didn't enjoy it :-) ),

post gratuitous or excessive foul language.

This is MY blog. I will continue to post whatever I want, whenever I want, and I don't need anyone's permission, as long as Blogger rules are followed.

Any one who doesn't like it should stay AWAY and pass their time in a more constructive fashion. Feel free to exercise your freedom of speech, but as I said, no one is going to hear you on this site...so go ahead, spill your seed if that excites you. Worthless venting is actually healthy, so I guess I should be encouraging it...

So we had our monthly "shabbaton", and guess who was chosen to carry away the leftovers? Oy, co-eeeeeehv-li ha-beten! BRAP!!!!!!!!
Chicken, koogles, chulent, more chicken, bread, more koogles.
And this, just as I left my friend's house; he did BBQ steaks and burgers and insisted on loading me up when I left.... Yes, I CAN say "no", but my kids canNOT say "no" to burgers.

Time Off !

I am looking forward to my upcoming vacation so much. I am BURNING OUT! When you are self-employed, it's harder to take time off 'cause there's no such thing as paid vacation. You pay for any travel, accommodations, yes--but then all the business which is lost during the holiday! OY VAY!
In the end however, taking needed time away from the job is important for sanity. Would you want YOUR doctor to be sick......of work?! Probably not.
I'm looking forward to spending part of my time off being lazy at home, and part of the time off seeing New York, visiting 770, and meeting a few contacts.
Just a few more days!

I'm feeling better now, due to a variety of factors, not the least of which is having a nice POA recently.

I wonder what's gonna happen, now that sevenfatcow partially imploded with the resignation of one editor and the loss of several commentators. But will the fire remain? As the smoke settles following the conflagration, is there anything left to burn?

Without the involvement of some personalities and not a little emotional instability, will sevenfatcow be just the poetry club with some esoteric ramblings on mysticism, half in Hebrew? Will mohammed eventually piss off everyone until he is the lone onefatcow, making love to himself in a corner and cursing the emptiness?

Only time will tell...

The Kübler-Ross model describes, in five discrete stages, the process by which people deal with grief and tragedy.

Kübler-Ross originally applied these stages to any form of catastrophic personal loss (job, income, freedom). This also includes the death of a loved one and divorce. Kübler-Ross also claimed these steps do not necessarily come in order, nor are they all experienced by all patients, though she stated a person will always experience at least two.

Others have noticed that any significant personal change can follow these stages.

My first experience with the "Jewish Blogosphere" has been over the past month with a site known as sevenfatcow. I basically came across the site accidentally and quickly attempted to find a voice and meet some people.

As a professional with a college and postgraduate degree, albeit with less jewish education than the others, I began posting my opinions--where I felt I could contribute, and staying out of very (very) esoteric discussion. This first experience was enlightening.

The blog has a couple of friendly well educated contributers, but the core of the blog is a small group of disaffected outcasts who form a tight clique--some guys who know each other from the hood, and prefer to squawk amongst themselves. Now, don't get me wrong--there's nothing wrong with being an outcast, or of not fitting in. On the contrary! I consider it a badge of honor in certain respects. Those people who can think for themselves, rather than parrot the views of others in lemming-like fashion normally should be admired, both for their originality and the determination to stand up and be counted.

The problem occurs when you get a small group of misfits who behave very childishly, turn every thoughtful discussion into violent epithets flaming back and forth, and who "playfully" delete posts by those wanting to join in a meaningful discussion but who are not "one of them."

Enter sevenfatcow, and find a posting that may interest you: i dare you. Regardless of the content of your contribution, you are likely to be ignored, or immediately an editor will respond to your thoughtful contribution with "idiot" or "fuck you," and that's about as far as you're going to get. This initially did not cause me to abandon the blog, but when I realized that I was unlikely to get support from others, I did just that.

Example: an editor posts a comment condemning u.s. healthcare system; as a physician and patient advocate, I commented thoughtfully and conscientiously, hoping to engage an interesting discussion---what I got?---NOTHING.
Example: an editor "YalHak" (who calls himself 'Reb' and posts his picture alongside a variety of influential minds from the previous couple of centuries, as if!) posts a poem by T.S. Eliot. Another editor responds cynically that "this post will get no comments because it is literary and....expect others to think outside the box." Following that, posts were made attempted to catalyze some discussion. Those respondents were immediately treated as ignorant people, not worth the time of the editors. The "Reb" replies, "it's a fucking poem dude..." So much for the guy who posts his picture alongside that of Carl Jung. sevenfatcow sevenfatcow sevenfatcow sevenfatcow

In fairness, I concede to having received a brave email from another blogger of like mind, which said:

I just wanted to thank you for writing on the cow. Thanks for insighting under pressure, and caring enough to tell us things.

I greatly appreciated the support of that contributor, and wish there were more like him. But,
basically, if you live in Brooklyn and smoke weed with these people, you're "in." If you're a curious mind, looking for engaging talk on matters of Jewish interest, hoping possibly even to make some friends...well....look elsewhere.

I just love to sit on my raft, and float down the river of life. It always amazes me how little inconsequential events can lead to unexpected results. I go with it.

Never intended to start a blog. It all started when a friend in shul mentioned to me that a mutual acquaintance (actually MY acquaintance, HIS brother-in-law) had recently jumped from the Empire State Building. He mentioned that I would learn all about it if I would google his name. I did. One of the many sites I was lead to was Sevenfatcow, a blog wherein a thread regarding the ESB incident was discussed. Somehow, my cyber acquaintances and their blog sites kind of drew me in to the whole blog thing. Oh yeah... I had always ignored myspace, but now I had a page up and running. Then another blog, and another. But which to keep and which to dump? We'll have to see about that...
